Dropping out of college to become a pro Dota player

Posted: Nov 25, 2023

Jacky "EternalEnvy" Mao is a professional Dota player who has inspired many with his personality and dedication to the game. He started playing Dota and other video games during high school. After enrolling at the University of Toronto, Jacky soon realized that his heart was not in his studies and that his true passion lay in pursuing playing Dota professionally. He decided to drop out of college in 2011 to pursue that goal.

Many people criticized Jacky's decision, saying he was throwing away his future. However, Jacky stayed true to his passion and worked hard to become one of the best Dota players in the world. He would see success reasonably quickly, forming the team No Tidehunter in September of the following year and winning some tournaments.

EternalEnvy would experience many ups and downs in his career, becoming one of the best carry players and winning several tournaments. His peak was winning the 2016 Shanghai Major with Team Secret.

Envy retired from the competitive scene in 2022, eleven years after his proclamation to turn pro. He nearly won a million dollars in tournament winnings in his Dota career. Jacky accomplished the dream he set for himself many years back through hard work and taking that risk, even in the face of doubters.

I will always miss DotA. Something that will always define me. Unforgettable memories. It's just a game but to me it was something that got me out of bed, and kept me up at night. I set out to become a pro, I succeeded, and then I set out to become the best, and I failed.

Dota doesn't have much of a future. At least not one that's worth throwing away yours for.

Although I'm doing decently in this program (low 80 average ish), I've decided that before starting the 2nd half of 2nd year, to go on "leave" and start playing DotA seriously.
