The World Chess Championships started in 1886, and there have been 57 championship matches before 2023. The youngest champion was Garry Kasparov, who beat the 3-time defending champion Anatoly Karpov in the 32nd championship in 1985 at 22. These two faced off in the World Chess Championship the previous year, but the World Chess Federation abandoned the match after no winner was determined after 48 games.

This championship was limited to 24 games, and if the match ended as a 12-12 tie, Karpov would win due to being the defending champ. Well, it got to game 24 with Kasparov leading 12-11 in points. Kasparov would need to avoid a loss to win the title. He would have the black pieces in the final game and ultimately won it after Anatoly resigned on move 42.
