The Oldest World Chess Champion was Wilhelm Steinitz, who won the first in 1886 at 49. He would win the next three championship matches, not losing until the fifth one in 1894 to Emanuel Lasker. He was so good that he was unbeaten in match play for three decades, from 1862 to 1894.
