Rudy Ruettiger, who was the inspiration for the movie Rudy, was 5'6, 165 pounds, unathletic with dyslexia, and had dreams of playing for the Notre Dame football team. Unfortunately, Notre Dame initially rejected Rudy due to low grades. However, the school finally accepted him after he studied for two years at Holy Cross College and on his fourth attempt.
After working so hard, Rudy would get a walk-on spot, chosen to serve on the scout team. After that, he would never get a chance in an actual game until his final one. Then, he would get three plays and record a sack in the game's last play.

Quotes
But every single day I've got people coming up to me, thanking me for bringing a little something to their lives. A couple of hours of inspiration to their lives. Veterans and kids and people dying of cancer. You know what? I'll take those people over the joy stealers. My people outnumber the joy stealers a thousand to one.

The story of Notre Dame icon Rudy Ruettiger? It's almost too good to be true
They are the ones who told Rudy he would never attend Notre Dame. Then they told him he would never survive there as a football walk-on, or that a 5-foot-6 tackling dummy would ever actually dress for a game, let alone play.

Rudy Ruettiger
Rudy has always known far more detractors than Barry Alvarez types, but he has never understood the upside of being a downer. And that’s what makes his legend so aspirational. It’s not about fame or fortune or having a movie made about your life, it’s about attitude.

Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger, Notre Dame's Famous Walk-On: The True Story
However, on the second play, Rudy broke through the line full of 300-pounders and brought Allen down to the ground for the final play of the game. After an uproar in the crowd and smiles across Domer faces around the stadium, Rudy was lifted onto the shoulders of his teammates and carried off the field.
