Oldest person to graduate from college

Leo Plass was the oldest to ever graduate from college at 99, when he graduated from Eastern Oregon University in June 2011. He was only one semester away from graduating in 1932 but dropped out to take a logging job with better pay prospects during the Great Depression. In 2011, his nephew reached out to the university and discovered that Leo was only three credits away from getting his degree and that the school would give him credit for his work experience. In the end, Leo got to pick up his diploma after attending the graduation.

Plass had wanted to be a teacher, but his friend offered him a job in the logging industry, according to Oregon news station KTVZ, and the better pay in a time of economic troubles was too good to resist.

So last week Leo Plass traveled to Eastern Oregon University to pick up his associates degree at Community Stadium with the Class of 2011. He was happy about the trip, and the whole diploma-graduation cap-ceremony thing, but he was also looking forward to returning home, where projects are waiting in the shop and he’s keeping busy fielding appearance requests for his birthday.
