Toucouille: LoL progamer with brittle bone disease

Posted: Feb 5, 2024

Osteogenesis imperfecta, or brittle bone disease, is a rare and debilitating disease where the bones are fragile and can break more easily than expected. That disease would limit most people with it from participating in competitive endeavors. However, it did not stop Loïc "Toucouille" Dubois from becoming a League of Legends professional gamer.

Dubois and his family didn't discover that he had the disease until he was a teenager; he would break his arm and hips a few times throughout his childhood before finally uncovering the disease. Early on after the diagnosis, Loic would have anxiety about what he could do with this limitation.

From a young age, Toucouille found solace in video games; he was particularly drawn to League of Legends, a multiplayer online battle arena game that requires quick thinking, strategic planning, and lightning-fast reflexes. Despite the physical limitations imposed by his condition, Toucouille threw himself into the game with gusto, determined to prove that he could compete at the highest level.

And compete he did. After proving himself in various games and tournaments, he joined a pro team, Beyond the Rift, at 16 years old in 2017. Over the years, Toucouille honed his skills, becoming one of the better mid-laners in the game. In 2022, he got on the second all-pro team of the 2022 LCS spring split.

All these years later, Toucouille still proves he can compete with some of the best players despite brittle bone disease.
