Simu Liu and his struggles before and after becoming a star
You might expect life was always perfect for Simu Liu, the Chinese-Canadian actor who recently became a superstar by starring in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Barbie. But that is not the case. Simu suffered from the high expectations his "tiger" parents set growing up. After college, he worked as a Deloitte accountant before getting laid out before a year passed.
Liu would then try his hand at acting, which wasn't an instant success for him. He would spend his entire life savings pursuing this, even going into debt. A few years later, he would have to model some photos as a stock model in 2014 due to being in credit card debt. Things would start turning around for him after that; he would get cast in his Shang-Chi breakthrough role five years later. Simu revealed he was nervous and anxious about playing such a pivotal role, the first Marvel Cinematic Universe Asian hero.
Even after becoming an A-lister movie star, Simu still struggles with his mental health from negative articles about him, among other non-work problems. His support system and therapy would help him through his struggles. From talking to his therapist, he would also discover that he had undiagnosed ADHD while growing up. Despite all his success, Simu Liu seems as human as the rest of us.

Ten years ago I thought my life was over. I had wasted countless time and money that my family had invested in me. Years of schooling, gifted programs, trying to live up to my parents’ expectations. It all came crashing down in an instant. I spent four of those years running around like a headless chicken trying to figure out how to break into the industry, struggling with credit card debt and taking any job I could,...Another three years were spent trying to break into Hollywood, sinking my precious life savings into something many would call a pipe dream. It’s really only been these past three years that anything I’ve done has begun to bear any fruit.

If I were to offer advice to others in a similar situation, it is that you really have to listen to yourself. You really have to take the time to check in with yourself and ask yourself the questions, you know, demand that of yourself, like, know what you want, or if you don’t know what you want, know what you want to try,...I think if what’s happened to me can be an inspiring story for anything, it’s this – you really can accomplish anything, but you need to give yourself permission to go for it.
