Brendan Fraser was an A-list actor in the late 1990s, starring in the Mummy franchise and doing everything from television appearances to plays. But after 2014, he would not act in any movie until 2019; he would continue to work in some tv series. His last significant successful role in a box office hit was The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in 2008. Many factors played a role in his decline, including a divorce, his mother's death, injuries necessitating surgeries, some unsuccessful movies, and potential fallout from his allegation of sexual assault against Philip Berk, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association at the time. These factors also caused Fraser to spiral into a depression.

Brendan eventually jumped back into movie acting in 2019 with two movies, an indie, and an Indian film. However, it took until 2021 for him to appear in a significant movie again when he was in Steven Soderbergh's No Sudden Move. Then, in 2022, he starred in The Whale by Darren Aronofsky. This role would lead to Brendan winning the Best Actor Oscars.

It can be hurtful. I know what it feels like to be compared to who you once were, and perhaps held to a standard that is unattainable or unfair.

  • “Hollywood is a mean place”: the story behind Brendan Fraser’s ‘Brenaissance’

In the late 1990s, it would have been hard to imagine Brendan Fraser — the buff heartthrob star of action comedy George Of The Jungle and blockbuster The Mummy — taking a role like Charlie in The Whale. After all, in Darren Aronofsky’s adaptation of Samuel D Hunter’s theatrical chamber piece, Charlie is a tender, grief-stricken English teacher who is housebound with severe obesity. The furthest cry from the chiselled, charming adventurers that made Fraser’s name.

  • Step Aside McConaughey, The Brenaissance is Here

Holy comeback, Batman: Brendan Fraser is back, and I mean really back. Once a major movie star in the ‘90s, Fraser’s career took a drastic nosedive after his third outing as Rick O’Connell in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008).

  • Trust: Brendan Fraser's Brenaissance Is Here, and It's Glorious

He was a big movie star in the '90s and '00s, but after his third Mummy movie in 2008, his time as a young hunk in action movies was over, and his career took a decade-long downturn. He became known more as a meme than a man.

  • What Ever Happened To Brendan Fraser?

If you watched movies at the end of the previous century, you watched Brendan Fraser. And though his run as a leading man in studio films lasted to the end of this past decade, he's been missing, or at least somewhere off in the margins, for some time now. He was there on the poster, year after year, and then he wasn't, and it took him turning up in a supporting part in the third season of a premium-cable show, The Affair, for many of us to even realize that he'd been gone.
