Harry Potter is everywhere in this day and age; you can find Harry Potter-based movies, television shows, plays, theme parks, and even a real-life sport. So it can be tough to imagine the author of the Harry Potter books struggling at any point. Joanne or J.K. Rowling published the first Harry Potter novel in 1997. It was not a straightforward path for her to get there.

Her ideas for Harry Potter first started back in 1990. Between the inception of Harry Potter to finishing her first manuscript in 1995, she lost her mother, got married and then divorced, was diagnosed with clinical depression, and considered suicide. At one point, Rowling was a single mother living on welfare working on the books.

Twelve different publishing houses rejected her first manuscript; it took a year before one accepted her manuscript. However, success quickly followed, and the Harry Potter series is the highest-selling novel series ever, with over 500 million copies sold.

Quotes
