First woman MLB GM

Posted: Oct 29, 2023

Kim Ng was the first woman to become a general manager in Major League Baseball (MLB) when the Miami Marlins gave her the role in 2020. Kim also became the first East Asian-American GM in MLB. Ng's journey to becoming a GM was not easy. She started as an intern for the Chicago White Sox in 1990 and worked her way up through various positions in different teams over the years. She has held roles in the front office of the New York Yankees, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the MLB itself.

Throughout her career, Ng has been passed over for GM positions multiple times, first starting in 2005. MLB teams passed over her at least five more times. In 2023, the Marlins won 84 games, the most wins since 2009, and made the playoffs. Unfortunately, Kim declined her contract option for 2024 due to disagreement with the team's future decision.

Kim is a trailblazer for women in sports and has broken down barriers that once seemed insurmountable.

This challenge is one I don't take lightly. When I got into this business, it seemed unlikely a woman would lead a Major League team, but I am dogged in the pursuit of my goals. My goal is now to bring Championship baseball to Miami. I am both humbled and eager to continue building the winning culture our fans expect and deserve.
