Entering Double Jeopardy in the 2017 Teachers Tournament semifinal game 1, David Clemmons had -$400; the leader Sara Holub had $8000; and Gail Ansheles was second with $1800. After seven questions into Double Jeopardy, David still had -$400, but Gail got up to $6600, and Sara was at $8400. Things got worse eleven questions later as Sara got up to $13,200 compared to David's $400. Winning looked bleak for the 11th-grade U.S. history teacher from Fort Worth, Texas.

Then, he scored a few higher-priced clues to reach $6k. Next, he would find the Daily Double and bet it all, getting it correct and jumping into second place. Then, he would keep going, taking the lead at some point and ending the round with $17.6k to Sara's $13.2k and Gail's $12.6k. Ultimately, he got the Final Jeopardy question right, winning the game $27,600 to Sara's $25,200.
