Vince McMahon's gamble on WWF and WrestleMania
Even if you are not a wrestling fan today, you might have heard of WrestleMania, the pinnacle professional wrestling event held annually by the WWE; the one in 2024 will be the 40th one. Instead, you might not have known that the first one was a massive gamble for the owner, Vince McMahon. In fact, Vince had to take many risks even to get to the first Wrestlemania.
Back then, the WWE was known as the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), and they were even less mainstream than it is today. In 1982, Vince bought the WWF from his father, and he had many ideas to improve the company. Vince wanted to expand WWF across other territories, which was a no-no at the time; each wrestling promotion focused on particular territories and rarely competed with others. Then, Vince wanted to expand nationally across the entire United States.
He would attempt to do so by buying another promotion, Georgia Championship Wrestling, with a TV timeslot. This television expansion did not go well due to low ratings, putting the WWF at risk and forcing Vince to sell the timeslot for a million dollars. Next, McMahon conceived of the idea of WrestleMania and would bet it all on it.
McMahon knew that for the WWF to become a major player in the entertainment industry, he needed to create a spectacle that would capture the public's imagination. He envisioned a show that would combine the athleticism of wrestling with the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. The event would be expensive, and to make the event a success, McMahon spared no expense, using the million dollars received from selling the TV slot. He brought in celebrities like Mr. T and Cyndi Lauper to attract a mainstream audience, and he invested heavily in production values with elaborate sets, costumes, and pyrotechnics.
The gamble paid off. WrestleMania 1 was a huge success, drawing a record-breaking crowd of over 19,000 fans to Madison Square Garden and generating millions of dollars in revenue. It was the beginning of a new era for wrestling, as the WWF became a household name and WrestleMania became an annual tradition.

Quotes
It was a huge gamble. The biggest gamble I've ever been involved with. It was a roll of the dice. Would fans watch in an arena and pay a lot of money to do it? ... At the end of the night, we had been partying quite heavily. If WrestleMania I had not succeeded, we wouldn't be where we are today.

Wrestlemania: The One That Started It All
The legend says that Vince McMahon put all of his money into the show and was either going to live by the sword, or die by it. As you can tell, they lived. The show was an event that tried to make wrestling mainstream. It had Muhammad Ali, Billy Martin, Cyndi Lauper, and Mr. T. It would be like Oscar De La Hoya, Joe Torre, Rihanna, and Vin Diesel being involved in a wrestling show today.
