Lowest drafted NBA MVP

Posted: Jun 25, 2023

Nikola Jokic did not come from the usual NBA background; he was born and raised in Serbia and played in the Serbian League instead of high school or college. Scouts noticed his passing abilities at the time but didn't like his athleticism. Thus, it was not shocking that he was drafted 41st in the 2014 NBA draft. All teams but Brooklyn Nets and New Orleans Pelicans passed on Nikola at least once; these two teams didn't have a draft pick before the Denver Nuggets picked him.

Jokic came over to the NBA a season later; he would quickly show promise, becoming a starter in the second half of his rookie season and finishing third in the Rookie of the Year voting. However, he would lose his starting role after scoring less than double digits in five out of his first eight games in his sophomore season. It would be 18 games later before he would regain the starter spot for good; Jokic would go on to nearly average a double-double for the season.

He kept improving yearly, eventually becoming an all-star and winning the MVP twice. Even while winning the MVPs, he would still have doubters who didn't think he was the best player in the league or deserved the MVP due to his defense or athleticism. In 2023, Jokic proved them all wrong by helping the Nuggets win the championship.

Quotes

Perhaps this sounds harsh, but Jokic is being talked up as an NBA prospect and it is hard to see how he gets there unless he can really improve his athleticism. Given how his body looks, that does not seem to be in the offing even if he does hit the weights.

To be honest, I didn’t even think I would be in the NBA, My goal when I started to play basketball back home, it was playing in Euroleague because that was kind of the closest top league to my country.
