Drew McIntyre: From being fired to becoming WWE Champion

Posted: Feb 2, 2024

Drew McIntyre is a name that every current WWE fan knows. At 6'5 and 265 pounds, the Scottish superstar stands out in the ring. He has accomplished numerous feats, including outlasting everyone at a Royal Rumble, main-eventing Wrestlemania, and winning the WWE championship. But did you know WWE once fired him?

In 2009, McIntyre was wrestling for WWE under the moniker The Chosen One. He would win a tag team title and the Intercontinental belt before getting relegated to low-card status. After the title reigns, Drew didn't impress much, leading to the WWE releasing him in 2014.

After his release, McIntyre didn't give up on his dreams. Drew would get stronger and improve his mic and wrestling abilities. He would wrestle for and win many titles at various indie promotions such as Insane Championship Wrestling (ICW), Evolve, Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA), and Pro Wrestling Guerrilla.

All the hard work paid off as WWE re-signed him to a contract with NXT in 2017. McIntyre would eventually win the NXT championship, join the main WWE roster, and become what he is today: one of the top superstars. He would admit he wasn't working as hard as he should have during his first go-around with the WWE. McIntyre's journey from being released to becoming a WWE Champion is a testament to his hard work and perseverance. It only took three years to re-sign and six years to reach the pinnacle of winning the WWE championship at Wrestlemania.

Quotes

I became one of the top wrestlers outside of WWE in the world, and it all happened because I started giving it my everything. I really wasn’t giving my everything in the top company in the world. I can make all these comments and all these judgements now because I was one of those guys. Being fired was the best thing that ever happened to me. I tell people that the best thing that can ever happen to you is getting fired and you can either sink or swim and I swam like hell. The reason why I swam the way I swam was because there was nothing else for me. All I know is professional wrestling and sports entertainment. This is all I know and I wanted to give it everything that I had.
